Sanne Wever wins first world gymnastics medal for Holland in 10 years

Winners pose with their medals following the beam routine in the women's apparatus final at the World Gymnastics Championships at the Hydro arena in GlasgowSanne Wevers, 24, has become the first Dutch woman to win a world championship gymnastics medal in 10 years.

Wevers won a surprise silver on the balance beam at the artistic gymnastics event in Glasgow on Sunday. It was her first appearance at a world championships final.

‘I’m speechless,’ Wevers said after the event, which was won by Simone Biles of the US. ‘I was surprised to make the final, but I had a good feeling all day. I was nervous because the beam is the beam, but to win silver is historic.’

Wevers took bronze on the uneven bars at the European championships earlier this year. Her sister Lieke won gold on the beam and bronze for her floor routine.
