‘Starbucks Dutch tax deal breaks state aid rules’: report
Starbucks will be told next week its tax deal with the Netherlands breaches EU state aid rules, Reuters reports on Friday, quoting ‘three people familiar with the matter’.
The investigation into the tax deal by the European Commission is one of several started last year. Fiat, iPhone maker Apple and online retailer Amazon are also the subject of tax probes.
‘The Starbucks and Fiat cases are ready,’ one of the people told Reuters. Reuters said decisions regarding Apple and arrangements by Amazon with the Luxembourg authorities would come later.
Both Starbucks and the European Commission declined to comment, Reuters said.
The European parliament has set up a special commission to look at the way European countries compete to attract multinationals with advance tax rulings and other incentives.
The Netherlands has long been under fire for its generous programme of tax treaties.
The Financieele Dagblad said earlier this year the Dutch tax office has made 14,619 advance tax agreements with international companies since 1991.
