Dutch lose to Iceland in key European football qualifier

Euro 2016 footballThe Dutch national football team’s hopes of qualifying for next year’s European championship took another blow on Thursday night after they lost 1-0 at home to Iceland.

Oranje, by this time down to 10 men, lost through a penalty in the 51st minute following a bad tackle by Gregory van der Wiel.

The Telegraaf described Danny Blind’s debut as coach as ‘worthy of a good cry’ and said everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Arjen Robben had to be substituted after pulling up injured and Bruno Martins Indi was sent off with a red card.

Blind, who took over as coach from Guus Hiddink this summer, also came under fire for substituting Klaas-Jan Huntelaar for Jeffrey Bruma.

The AD said Oranje’s qualification for the European title competition has turned into ‘a long, drawn-out wrestle with Murphy’s law’. The Volkskrant said the team is in ‘total chaos’, describing the players as ‘brainless’ and ‘unprofessional’.

Oranje remain third in Group A with 10 points from seven matches. Iceland are on top with 18 and the Czech Republic second with 16 points. The Dutch were third in last year’s World Cup.
