Competition kick-off: Ziggo to launch dedicated sports channel

ZiggoCable company Ziggo and broadcaster Sport 1 plan to launch a free sports channel at the end of the year, the AD says on Thursday.

The dedicated sports channel will be a direct competitor to Fox and gives it an edge over other cable firms such as KPN, the AD says. Ziggo Sport will include Champions League football, European championship qualifiers, golf and Formula 1 racing.

The move has been made possible by Ziggo’s takeover by Liberty Global, which operates in 14 countries.

Sports presenter Jack van Gelder, who said earlier this year he is leaving the public broadcasters after 40 years, will work for Ziggo Sport, which will be available to all 4.2 million  Ziggo subscriber households.
