Police investigate fire which destroyed Haarlem mayor’s car

car fire blazeHaarlem’s mayor is assuming a fire which totally destroyed his car was not specifically targeted at him, local broadcaster RTV Noord-Holland says on Monday.

The car was parked on a square behind the mayor’s home.

Bernt Schneiders told the broadcaster he was woken by a lot of noise and two loud bangs ‘which turned out to be the tyres exploding’. Asked if he thought his car had been targeted specifically, Schneiders said: ‘so far, no I don’t’.

The blaze happened around 01.00 hours. Police are now investigating the cause of the fire, which they suspect to be arson. ‘Of course, they will look into whether or not this was targeted at me,’ Schneiders said.
