Two shooters killed at anti-Islam event in US attended by Geert Wilders
Two people have been killed and one injured at a shooting incident in the US attended by Dutch populist politician Geert Wilders.
Wilders, who was one of the speakers at the event in the town of Garland, Texas, had left the building when a car drove up and two people approached security officials, according to media reports.
One security guard was shot in the leg and the two suspects were then gunned down. Some reports suggest the two may have been carrying explosives. The two have yet to be formally identified but various people claiming to be from IS have claimed responsibility via social media.
The event was a cartoon competition organised by the anti-Islam America Freedom Defense Initiative with a top prize of €10,000. Some 40 people were still in the building when the shooting happened.
Wilders said on Twitter he had left the building immediately after giving his speech and posted a photograph of himself surrounded by a heavily-armed security team.
In a copy of Wilders’ speech on the PVV website, the MP says he will help organise a show of the cartoons in the Netherlands.
‘I invite you to come to the Netherlands with this exhibition. I will help you exhibit these cartoons in the Dutch parliament building,’ the speech states.
