PostNL to pull out of British postal delivery market

post lettersDutch postal delivery firm PostNL is suspending its British delivery operations indefinitely, putting 2,000 jobs on the line, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Monday.

PostNL has operated under the name Whistl in Britain for the past nine months but has actually had a presence in London, Liverpool and Manchester for three years.

The decision to suspend delivery operations comes two weeks after investor LDC said it would not put money into further developing the unit.

LDC’s decision led PostNL to re-evaluate the potential of its British operations, the company is quoted as saying by the FD. ‘In order to halt the losses, we have taken the difficult decision to suspend delivery services pending an evaluation,’ the company said.

Royal Mail will now take over Whistl’s delivery services to ensure continuity of service.

Whistl will continue collecting and sorting business mail, delivering packages and advertising material, the FD says.
