Police unions on Thursday took their campaign for more pay to parliament for a day of noisy protests.

A large group of protesting police officers has effectively surrounded the parliamentary complex on foot and in their cars and are sounding their sirens for 10 minutes every hour.

Police unions are demanding a 3.3% pay rise to end a four-year pay freeze, as well as measures to enable older police officers to retire before the age of 67 and compensation for the effect of the recent major reorganisation of policing operations.

Justice minister Ard van der Steur has said there is no money to meet the police demands.
