Opposition parties pull out of coalition 2016 budget talks

Piggy bank with eurosThe three parties which have helped the government win majority support for some of its polices have pulled out of talks on the 2016 budget, broadcaster Nos says on Thursday.

The D66 Liberal democrats and minor religious parties ChristenUnie and SGP have helped ministers pass controversial legislation in the upper house of parliament and have become known as the ‘constructive opposition’.

However, the five parties together will not have a majority when the new senate is sworn in, and that makes agreeing budgetary policy now a waste of time, the parties say.

The parties say the government should also look to the Christian Democrats, Socialists and anti-Islam PVV for support in order to win senate approval for its 2016 spending plans.

The government always presents its budget on the third Tuesday in September.

The coalition has a narrow majority in the lower house of parliament but will be dozens of seats short in the upper house when the new senate is voted in next month.
