10 Dutch jihadis killed this year, 199 have gone to Syria

April 22, 2015

Silhouette of soldierAt least 10 Dutch jihadis have been killed this year, bringing the total to 30, according to Dutch security service chief Rob Bertholee on Nos television.

In total, 199 Dutch nationals have gone to Syria and Iraq, including at least 40 women and 30 children under the age of 10, Nos quoted Bertholee as saying. Of them, 35 have come back and are being closely monitored, the AIVD chief said.

In particular, everyone should be worried about children of jihadis, who have been raised with an ideology of violence and brought up to consider killing is normal, Bertholee told a news conference.

The AIVD’s annual report was published on Wednesday and highlights the dangers also presented by jihadis who do not join IS but feel encouraged to take action on their home territory.

The danger such individuals present to Dutch society is clearly illustrated by the attacks in Paris and Copenhagen, Bertholee said.
