Dutch short track skater takes men’s world title

Knegt of the Netherlands celebrates as he won men's 3000m super final at ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in MoscowDutch short track speed skater Sjinkie Knegt took the men’s overall world title in Moscow on Sunday.

Knegt beat his closest rival Park Se-yeong of South Korea by 0.023 seconds in the final 3,000-meter race. He becomes the first European-born skater to win the men’s overall title since 1991, news agency AP said.

‘I knew I had to win the super final,’ Knegt said after the race. ‘It was a gamble and I did not know who was behind me. But at a certain point I thought “I just have to go for it”.’

Knegt had been disqualified in the 1,000 metres, making his chance of a medal slim.

In the end, he also took silver in the 1,500 metres and was part of the Dutch team which won bronze in the men’s relay event.
