PostNL to scrap a further 700 jobs

post sorting officePostal firm PostNL is to scrap a further 700 jobs in what the company says is a new reorganisation plan.

The company plans to scrap 150 jobs in marketing and sales and another 550 in its auto firm which delivers the post by car, according to the AD.

The loss of jobs in the auto firm is the result of a decision no longer to deliver letters in provincial areas by car but by bike and scooter. That decision is the result of a continuous fall in the number of letters being sent in the Netherlands, the paper says.

The unions CNV and Abvakabo say the announcement has led to unrest among workers and they will be holding talks on Thursday evening with PostNL representatives.

PostNL has already laid off 10,000 delivery staff and replaced them with cheaper part-time workers.

The company will ennounce its 2014 results on February 23.
