Dutch skaters won five gold medals at the World Championships in Heerenveen which ended on Sunday.

Sven Kramer won his sixth world title in the 5,000 metres, but Ireen Wust had a disappointing tournament, failing to win any golds and taking three silvers (3,000, 1,500 and team pursuit).

The Dutch men’s team of Sven Kramer, Koen Verweij and Douwe de Vries also took gold in the team pursuit. The Dutch men had a clean sweep in the 5,000 metres and Jorrit Bergsma won gold in the 10,000 metres.

Arjan Stroetinga and Irene Schouten won the mass start events for the Netherlands. This was the first time the mass start race had been included in the world championships.

The mass start involves up to 20 skaters racing around the oval at the same time for 15 laps (women) or 20 laps (men). Usually in speed skating two skaters are on the course at the same time.
