Amsterdam attracts more foreign firms but they bring fewer jobs
A record number of foreign firms set up in Amsterdam in 2014 but created fewer jobs than in previous years, the city council said on Friday.
In total, 139 foreign firms opened for business in the Amsterdam region, up from 115 in 2013. However, they only brought with them 1,308 jobs, over 400 fewer than in 2013, the council figures show.
The new arrivals included 42 ‘headquarters’, including online entertainment group Netflix and taxi service Uber.
Most came from the US and Canada (66), followed by Japan (14). There were 42 new arrivals from other EU countries, mainly in marketing and sales offices focusing on business services or the creative industries.
At the same time, the number of ‘highly skilled migrants’ processed by Amsterdam’s official expat centre rose 30% to 8,000.
