The Dutch government’s aim to ensure 14% of Dutch energy is produced using sustainable methods by 2020 will be impossible to achieve, according to a damning report by several leading advisory bodies.

The report is due to be presented to ministers on Tuesday but an advance copy is in the hands of broadcaster RTLZ. Green energy currently accounts for around 5% of Dutch energy.

The report says four respected agencies, including the national statistics office CBS and the government’s spacial planning advisory group, have concluded the target cannot be achieved – even in the best case scenario.

Targets

The government has already revised its 2020 target down from 16% to 14%, following an agreement with Brussels.

However, the report states that given current policy, sustainable energy will only account for 10.6% of total production in six years time. Even if all the government’s new plans are put into practice, the total will amount to no more than 12.6%.

Labour leader Diederik Samsom said if the report is true, economic affairs minister Henk Kamp has a lot of explaining to do.

According to RTLZ, delays in building wind parks because of protests is one of the reasons for the failing policy.
