CDA proposes ‘parole for life’ for violent offenders

The CDA has drawn up plans to allow the courts to extend indefinitely parole for people convicted of serious crimes and justice minister Fred Teeven thinks the measure is a good idea, the AD reports on Wednesday.

The paper says the proposal would have majority backing in parliament. It is due to be discussed on Thursday during a debate on other changes to the parole system proposed by Teeven.

Currently judges can extend parole for a single two-year period but the CDA says judges should be able to reassess parole agreements every two years instead. In addition, judges should also be free to impose extra conditions on people on parole, such as a ban on alcohol or working with minors, the AD says.

Jail

This would mean people could be continually monitored once they have served jail time. The CDA says the measure would be appropriate for paedophiles and those convicted of serious violent crime.

‘It is a far-reaching step but we are talking about the most dangerous people,’ CDA parliamentarian Madeleine van Toorenburg is quoted as saying by broadcaster Nos. ‘The judges would not automatically apply the sanction, only if there are serious risks for society.
