50,000 buildings in Groningen vulnerable to earthquakes

Some 50,000 homes and schools in Groningen province may need to be strengthened to deal with the impact of earthquakes caused by natural gas extraction, local broadcaster RTV Noord says on Wednesday.

The broadcaster says gas extraction company NAM is still waiting for the results of an official report into the damage risk but assumes some 50,000 properties in the vicinity of Loppersum will need work.

Loppersum is at the centre of gas extraction and is regularly hit by earthquakes caused by the ground settling.
