Van Rouwendaal wins open water gold in Berlin

Sharon van Rouwendaal was the surprise winner in the 10 km open water swimming on day two of the European Championship in Berlin.

The Dutch swimmer, making her debut in open water at an international event, came in at 1.56.06, just one second ahead of the Hungarian Eva Risztov.

The bronze medal went to the Italian Aurora Ponsele.

Van Rouwendaal will compete in five other swimming events during the championship.
