Is Rotterdam’s new market the world’s biggest work of art?

The magnificent ceiling of the new indoor market in Rotterdam is as big as two football fields and has been dubbed the biggest work of art in the world.

The work, named the Horn of Plenty, was designed by Dutch artist Arno Coenen and a small team. ‘We sat in the garden and everything was in blossom and there were insects flying around,’ Coenen told Nos television. ‘Then we got the idea.’

The ceiling features massive pieces of fruit, flowers and insects and has been called by some the Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam for its attention to detail.

According to the Huffington Post, Coenen enlisted the help of Pixar Studios to create an image large enough, and sharp enough, to fill 4,000 tiled pieces.

The new market, which will have 100 permanent stands plus restaurants, will open to the public in October.
