Evangelical public broadcaster EO and the Jewish broadcasting company Joodse Omroep are developing plans to stage an Amsterdam-wide performance on Rembrance Day to commemorate Anne Frank, Dutch media says on Wednesday.

The broadcasters have reportedly confirmed a report on shock blog GeenStijl which got hold of the plans and headlined its report ‘let this be a joke’. 

The exact details still have to be worked out but the performance will include actors performing parts of Anne Frank’s diary at different locations in the city, The Post Online says.  There will also be a torchlight procession to the house where she lived in hiding on the Prinsengracht.

Songs

As well as acting scenes from the book, the performers will sing popular Dutch songs by bands such as Blof. The locations will all be connected to Anne Frank’s life.

The EO said in a statement it considered it to be important to ‘keep the history of World War II alive and to tell the story again and again’. The event will be an appropriate conclusion to the Remembrance Day ceremonies, the broadcaster said.

Local broadcaster AT5 reports that the EO claims to have the support of the city council but officials at the town hall say they know nothing about it.

A spokesman for the Anne Frank Foundation, which runs the Prinsengracht centre, said they had heard of the plan two years ago but nothing since then.
