A group of locals living in the Groningen earthquake zone are demanding the government have various scientific reports on the risks associated with natural gas extraction translated into Dutch.

Local broadcaster RTV Noord says people living in Loppersum and Groningen think the English language used in the reports is too difficult for them to understand and want translated versions.

If the minister does not agree, they plan to go to court to force the economic affairs ministry to pay for translations, RTV Noord says.

Damages

There has been considerable structural damage to property in areas where natural gas is being extracted from pockets deep below the surface.

Ministers in January reached agreement to cut back natural gas extraction in Groningen province, following mounting concern about the risk of earthquakes.

In the area around the village of Loppersum, one of the worst affected areas, gas production will be slashed by 80% for the next three years.

In addition, ministers have earmarked an extra €1.2bn for Groningen province to strengthen buildings and the infrastructure.
