Dutchman implicated in Canadian teen suicide over webcam blackmail

The Dutchman in custody in connection with a major webcam sex scandal is suspected of placing a naked picture of a Canadian girl online who later committed suicide, Dutch media report on Friday.

Amanda Todd killed herself in October 2012. Before she died she made an eight-minute video outlining what had happened to her which went viral and has been seen by over 17 million people, Canadian media reported.

The man, aged 35, was remanded in custody at a short court hearing on Wednesday. He is suspected of persuading under-age teenagers in the Netherlands, Britain, the US and elsewhere into performing sex acts in front a webcam.

According to RTL news, the Canadian authorities want to take legal action against the man and may request his extradition.

Arrest

The man was arrested in January in Tilburg and is still under investigation. The public prosecution department said it has not yet discovered how many girls were abused online.

The suspect also probably defrauded adult men living outside the Netherlands by fooling them into thinking they were in internet contact with an under-age boy. They also performed sex acts online.

The man faces charges of indecent assault, the production and dissemination of child pornography, fraud, computer intrusion and the possession of hard drugs, the Dutch public prosecution department said in a statement.

Dutch police and prosecutors are cooperating closely with the authorities in other countries, including the UK National Crime Agency, the statement said.
