Councillor, suspected of corruption, joins integrity committee

A former councillor for the right-wing liberal VVD, who is under investigation for corruption, has been appointed to Roermond town council’s integrity committee.

Jos van Rey and three other newly-elected councillors have been charged with assessing if nominees are suitable to become aldermen.

Van Rey’s new party, the LVR, took 10 of the 31 seats in the March local elections. The committee is made up of two coalition and two opposition councillors. The LVR is the only opposition party.

The public prosecution department is still investigating Van Rey, who was a councillor for 14 years until resigning in 2012, the Telegraaf says.
