First Dutch female ‘terrorist’ retrial starts

Amsterdam court on Tuesday begins three days of hearings into the case of Soumaya S – given a four-year jail term as the Netherlands’ first female terrorist in 2008 but about whose conviction there are now serious doubts, the Telegraaf reports.

The Supreme Court in 2011 ordered a retrial of her case following claims that justice ministry officials withheld crucial telephone recordings from the defence.

Her lawyer Bart Nooitgedagt now has the complete set of recordings and says they show Soumaya was not involved in a plot to kill Dutch politicians as a member of the Hofstadgroep, the Telegraaf reports.

Evidence

This week’s trial will show how the public prosecution department deliberately withheld phone tap evidence to steer her conviction, the lawyer says.

One important phone call apparently concerned Soumaya asking her sister, who worked in a pharmacy, to provide the addresses of politicians who used its services.

Soumaya S’s ex-husband Nouriddin el F was sentenced to eight years in jail for his role in the Hofstadgroep – the name given by police to a loose grouping of young Muslims.

The young woman is now a political science student and has ties with academics, politicians and counter-terrorism experts, the Telegraaf says. She is now involved in combating radicalism.
