It’s safer to go clubbing, nightlife related violence is down

The number of violent incidents at Dutch clubs and bars fell for the third year in a row last year, the Volkskrant reports on Wednesday.

In total, police received reports of 5,862 incidents, compared with over 7,500 in 2010, the paper says. The Volkskrant used freedom of information legislation to obtain the figures.

A police spokeswoman told the paper the decline is due to better coordination between the police, local government and the hospitality industry.

For example, police in the bigger cities or places with a history of trouble use a special nightlife alarm number so they can respond to incidents more quickly, the paper says.

In addition, cafe and bar owners are also operating stricter door policies and turning away potential customers who have had too much to drink.
