Amsterdam offers refuge to animal domestic violence victims

Amsterdam city council is spending €20,000 on providing an experimental refuge for pets which are victims of domestic violence.

The Parool says the city has taken the decision because research shows the pets of female domestic violence victims are often hit and kicked as well. In total, 55% of abuse victims say their partners also hurt or killed their pets.

In addition, some women are unwilling to move to a shelter to escape the abuse because they do not want to leave their pets behind, the paper said.

During the trial period, dogs and cats will be looked after for two weeks, giving the victim time to find alternative accommodation. The trial will run for six months and will be evaluated in June.
