First official frost of the winter

The temperature dipped below freezing in several parts of the Netherlands overnight, making it the first official frost of the year, weather bureaus said on Monday.

The coldest temperature of -1.4 Celsius was recorded at the Deelen airbase in Gelderland.

There was ground frost earlier this year, but to count as an official frosty night, the air temperature must cool to below zero 1.5 metres above the ground.

Road gritters were out in several places as a precaution, news agency ANP said.
