Airline Transavia has cancelled flights to Sharm al-Sheikh in Egypt after the Dutch security service AIVD said it had information a terrorist attack was being planned, the NRC reported on Wednesday.

The AIVD shared its information with Transavia and tour operator ArkeFly, the NRC said. It bases its claims on various sources.

A spokesman for Transavia told the paper flights on Friday and Saturday had been scrapped ‘on the basis of a risk analysis by the security department’.

All flights to Sharm al-Sheikh have been suspended for the next two weeks at least. Other flights to Egypt are not affected.

Unrest

ArkeFly is due to resume flights to the resort on October 27 and is currently studying the situation, a spokesman said. ‘There is talk of a threat,’ the paper quoted a spokesman as saying.

Flights to Egypt have been cancelled for several weeks because of the political unrest.

According to Nos television, the AIVD suggests unnamed militia may have been planning to fire rockets at planes as they flew over the desert. Nos did not say the threat was aimed specifically at Dutch aircraft.
