Dutch internet users are becoming more choosy

Dutch internet users are becoming more choosy about the social media they use and consult fewer online news services, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday, quoting ING research.

While social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are still attracting more users, there is a corresponding rise in inactive users as well, the research showed. Only Facebook is being actively used more in 2013 than last year.

Two-thirds of the 1,500 people questioned use Facebook at least once a week, which is up on last year. But 27% said they never use Facebook at all, which is up three percentage points on 2012.

News sites such as nu.nl are now popular with 56% of people, compared with 63% last year. Newspaper sites are read by 52% at least once a week, particularly by older people.
