School book publishers get tough on photocopying

The Dutch publishers’ association is clamping down on the illegal photocopying of school books and course material, Trouw reports on Tuesday.

A number of photocopy shops in the big cities have already paid hefty fines for sanctioning the copying, and schools are being warned they could be fined up to €100,000 if they break the rules, Trouw reports.

Spokesman Frank van Amerongen says the surge in copying is partly due to cuts in school budgets for books. Schools are given an amount of money for books per pupil.
