Single person households to increase

The number of single person households in the Netherlands is set to increase to 44% by 2060 compared with 37% now, according to figures from the central statistics agency CBS.

The CBS expects the number of people living alone to grow from 2.8 million now to 3.3 million in2025 and to 3.8 million by 2060.

The main cause is the aging of the population and the increasing number of widows and widowers. However, the age at which people are widowed is rising with the rise in life expectancy.

Other causes are youngsters living alone for a while before moving in with a partner and the growing number of divorces, says the CBS.

Nevertheless, the number of two person households will remain larger than that for single people, is the CBS forecast. They expect 4.3 million couples to be living together in 2025, 150,000 more than at the beginning of 2013.

The total number of households is expected to rise by 630,000 to 8.2 million in the next 12 years. This is slightly down on the rise during the past 12 years.
