Most roads reasonably clear, but weather warning remains for the north

Sunday’s snowfall led to problems with Monday’s rush hour traffic being largely confined to the north, news agency ANP reported.

However, one person was reported killed in Groningen when their car skidded off the road and into a canal.

Transport ministry grit lorries and snow ploughs were out in force to keep main roads clear but by 07.15, a jam of some 14 km had built up on the A7 between Hoorn and Zaandam, a busy commuter route. Long delays were also reported on the A1.

Since Sunday night, some 12,000 tonnes of salt has been spread on the nation’s roads, Nos television said. Around 1,200 transport ministry workers are out clearing the roads using 500 grit lorries and 350 snow ploughs.

More snow is set to fall over the Netherlands on Monday and a code amber weather warning remains in place for the north.

Last Tuesday’s snow led to a new record level of congestion, with over 1,000 km of jams during the height of the morning rush hour.
