Mass goose gas plan cancelled

Plans to gas hundreds of thousands of geese in the Netherlands in an effort to stop damage to crops have been put on ice, Trouw reports on Wednesday.

Although the goose population still needs to be reduced by 500,000, farmers, nature organisations and provincial governments have agreed to look for alternative ways of cutting their numbers, Trouw says.

The change of heart follows calls from animal rights groups for ministerial intervention. Animal protection group Dierenbescherming has written to farm minister Sharon Dijksma to say gassing is not only 'very painful' and labour-intensive but will cost more than the damage caused by geese to carry out.

The organisation is urging the minister to look into alternative methods, such as destroying nests and eggs and making the Dutch landscape less attractive to geese. Changes in the water table would also have an effect.

The Dierenbescherming talks long-term sense: make the landscape less attractive for geese, alter the water table, and have thousands running around enforcing goose family-planning. However it is not a cheap and easy solution, and may disrupt the habitat of other animals causing further problems. Gassing is not the goose solution, but a permit to humanely cull for resale (duck shooting season)can keep numbers under control, and provide food for the table. All killing is unpleasant, but killing and then dumping the meat while families go hungry is disgusting.

I have lived near gees for the last 10 years. I have seen them attack people and native wildlife - even kill a small dog and other animals. They are not "kittens with wings" - but if you have kill them, do it quick, and sell them to the butcher or eat them yourself.
