British prime minister cancels Amsterdam speech

British prime minister David Cameron on Thursday night cancelled plans to give a major speech on Europe in Amsterdam because of the Algerian hostage situation.

The prime minister’s office said Cameron had decided not to travel to the Dutch capital on Thursday evening after information from Algeria showed ‘he simply cannot be away’, the Financial Times said.
The speech, in front of economists, local business leaders and others, should have taken place at the Beurs van Berlage, the former stock exchange which has now been turned into a conference centre.
