Two men die in 'wild west' shooting and car chase in Amsterdam

Sunday 30 December 2012

Two men were shot dead in Amsterdam on Saturday night in what the city’s mayor Eberhard van der Laan described as a ‘wild west’ situation.

The two men, said to be ‘known to the police’, died after being shot by automatic weapons after the car they were in was reportedly rammed by a silver Audi. They were aged 21 and 28 and are from the capital, police said.

Two police officers on motorbikes were also shot as they gave chase to the shooter's car on the city’s Haarlemmerweg, Nos television reported.

Balaclava

One eyewitness told the Telegraaf the incident began when a Range Rover and the Audi collided and a man in a balaclava got out of the Audi and shot the others.

The Range Rover, which has French number plates, is now being examined by police, as is the escape car. The occupants of the Audi escaped without trace.

The shooting happened on the same day the Parool reported there had been just 14 violent deaths in Amsterdam in 2012.
