Deadline to prosecute serious crimes scrapped
Tuesday 13 November 2012
The senate voted on Tuesday to scrap the statute of limitations for crimes carrying a 12-year prison sentence, including those concerning serious child abuse.
The limitation on crimes carrying a sentence of eight years or more will be lengthened from 12 years to 20.
One of the considerations for the move is modern forensic techniques such as dna research, which make it possible to find evidence long after the crime has been committed, the justice ministry says.

certain serious crimes, of course, should have no statute of limitations, murder being one of them.
