Project X Haren rioters will have to help pay for the damageThursday 22 November 2012 Youngsters convicted of vandalism and violence during the Project X Haren riots will have to pay towards repairing the damage caused, the Leeuwarden appeal court ruled on Thursday. The public prosecution department's call for a €500 fine per person is 'a reasonable demand', the court said, overturning a lower court's decision. An adult rioter was earlier sentenced to 60 hours community service but the magistrate refused to make him pay into a special damages fund as well. Juvenile rioters have been ordered to come up with the cash. However, the Leeuwarden court said the public prosecution department would have to come up with a special system for the money because current laws on compensation only apply to mental and physical damage. The public prosecution department will now make a €500 payment part of every sentencing demand in connection with the riots, which broke out when a girl's birthday party announcement on Facebook went viral.

Isn't €500 a most rediculous penalty? Where is the disincentive to commit this crime again in the future.
By Mike | 22 November 2012 2:43 PMIs the court right? Absolutely not! 500? They are liable for every Euro of damage caused plus the time effort.. of homeowners to repair. They should pay for the extra Police. They should all have wages garbished if employed. Those not working should be forced to work and pay it back and all should be on probation for at least 24 months
