Heavy rains increase insurance premiums

Tuesday 07 August 2012

The number of damage claims due to this summer's heavy rains have shot up so much that insurance premiums will have to rise.

The number of claims for water damage to houses and contents has reached a record, insurance assessor site Independer told the AD. There have been more claims in the seven months so far this year than in the whole of 2011, says the site.

Consequently, premiums on house and content policies will have to rise by at least €20, according to Independer.

Insurance company ASR says the rise is 'unavoidable'. 'This is not just an incident but the result of climate change,' a spokesman told the AD.

Should insurance premiums rise because of the weather? Let us know on the comment form below.

I find the excuse of "climate change"used by a corporation as ironic. They used to say an "act of god" for natural disasters and refuse to pay out. I guess anything will be used in order for insurance companies to increase prices in order to show big earnings to investors!
