Want to swim? Avoid the rivers and there are jams to the beach

The Netherlands biggest rivers such as the Rhine, Meuse and Waal are the most dangerous places in the country to swim because of the shipping and the treacherous currents, government officials told website nu.nl on Tuesday.

Last year, for example, 11 people died while swimming in rivers in Gelderland, officials told the website.
This means even though the river beaches may look inviting in the hot weather, swimmers should avoid going into the water, officials said.

Meanwhile, the ANWB weather service said there were long traffic jams on may roads to the coast in the late morning on Tuesday. Scheveningen, Hoek van Holland, Katwijk and Zandvoort were particularly popular with beach-goers.
The sunny weather is expected to last until the weekend, when it will turn cooler, according to the KNMI weather bureau.
