Poor weather leads to boom in last-minute sun holidays

The wet weather so far this summer means more people are booking last-minute sunshine holidays, with one holiday firm reporting a 40% rise in late bookings, Nos television reports.

Sunweb, which has a last-minute booking office at Schiphol airport, said it had recorded a 40% rise on summer 2011, while D-reizen said its sales were up 15%.
A spokesman for the TUI travel group confirmed the trend, adding that the rise comes on top of sharp growth in last-minute holidays in 2011.
‘People are fed up, come here with their suitcase already packed and look for something cheap and sunny,’ one Schiphol-based travel agent told Nos.
