Police intervene after partygoers rampage in Rotterdam (update)

Six people were arrested when riot police were called out to restore order in central Rotterdam in the early hours of Thursday morning after partygoers went on the rampage.


Trouble broke out after police ordered the end of festivities in the Baja Beach cafe on the Stadhuisplein where several hundred youngsters had been drinking. According to one report, as many as 600 youths had been in the cafe.
At least 20 shops were damaged after fights broke out and some youths began throwing bricks at shop windows. Cars were also attacked and at least one shop was looted, according to media reports.
Arrests
Police carried out several charges in an effort to get the situation under control.
‘We’ve had to run for our lives from the police. The entire Stadhuisplein has been closed off,’ one partygoer called Lars said using the microblogging service Twitter.
According to Nos television, the area was quiet again at around 05.00 hours.
