More students sign up for ‘lottery’ university subjects

Almost 41,000 would-be students have signed up for university and college courses which require a lottery for places, a slight increase on last year, higher education body Duo said on Monday.

The results of the draw for 26,300 places will be announced on Tuesday.
This may be the last time students may be allocated places to study popular subjects like medicine and law by lottery. The government plans to allow universities to directly choose which students to admit for oversubscribed courses.

Which is a better way of selecting students – a lottery which gives everyone an equal chance or by exam results? Have your say using the comment form below.
