More job losses forecast for construction sector

The number of orders for building work is so low the sector is forecasting a flood of job losses over the coming months.

One-third of building companies say they expect to sack workers because the number of orders continued to fall in June, according to figures from the sector’s economic institute (EIB) quoted in the Telegraaf.
The EIB questioned 400 companies with more than ten workers.
Office and house building in particular is suffering from the downturn, with 40% of companies predicting job losses. In road building just 10% will have to lay off workers.
The EIB says it found virtually no companies planning to take on extra workers, reports the Telegraaf.
Crisis
The government is so concerned about the situation in the building industry it set up a special crisis team in January. Led by Joop van Oosten, former chairman of building company Baan, the team involves private sector companies as well as construction companies and developers.
So far, there has been no word on its progress.
According to home affairs minister Liesbeth Spies, the sector should generate some 6.5% of Dutch national product and creates 350,000 jobs.
