Holland’s widest motorway may get higher speed limit

Transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen is to draft legislation allowing motorists to drive at 130 kph on part of the A2 motorway at night, she told Radio 1 on Friday.

This week the Telegraaf newspaper launched a campaign to have the speed limit increased after it emerged police would be carrying out speed checks on part of the motorway which is five lanes wide in both directions. The motorway has a 100 kph limit, even at night.
‘I understand people’s frustration,’ the minister told the radio programme. ‘They see a wide road with no-one on it, and then it is hard to understand the 100 kph limit.’

The higher speed limit from 19.00 to 06.00 hours will affect the stretch of the A2 between Vinkeveen and Maarssen.
This part of the A2 is the widest motorway in the country. The 100 kph limit was agreed with local councils in order to keep noise and environmental pollution under control. The minister says new sound walls and other measures will allow motorists to drive faster while meeting these agreements.
Parliament will vote on the plan after the summer recess in September.
