Ambulance service in crisis, says union

Monday 11 June 2012

There is a growing crisis in the ambulance service because of ageing ambulances and under-trained staff, according to trade union Abvakabo in Monday's Algemene Dagblad.

The union's Fred Seifert told the paper the ageing ambulances can take too long to reach the scene of an accident and incident rooms often send the wrong kind of help to an emergency.

The ambulance service is in crisis, with growing complaints about the work pressure and increasing complaints from patients, he said.

Changes are needed quickly to improve the service. 'An ambulance with two paramedics is increasingly replaced by an ambulance motorbike,' according to Seifert. 'If the patient cannot ride pillion, there is a delay while a proper ambulance is sent for.'

The sector organisation Ambulancezorg Nederland says it does not think this is a general view of the service, but that it will discuss the problems with the union later on Monday.

no worries folks, I'm sure Rutte will send the JSF jet fighter to help you or your child in an emergency instead of the old ambulances - because that's where the money is going ;)

I am a EMT and I had to call for a ambulance in the Netherlands and the operator asked me if it was a life threatening emerengency or iif it could wait. LOL Are you kidding...How can a non-medical trained person know that? That is why they are sending the wrong ambulance. they need to ask the right questions and train there people on the phones first. What a mess they are making again. They need to get it done right the first time.

Bill, you are just being, once again, populist. External defense and anti-terrorism deterrence force are not mutually replaceable with health care.

No problem Andre, whatever you say. Let's see how the Dutch vote in September and what happens then, ok? We also have a very important election coming up on Sunday, the Greek elections.
With the new union of the SP, PvDA and Groenlinks, I think conservative thinkers and voters like yourself may have a little problem ;) You can call me and the others that support this union and this type of thinking what ever you like in the meantime. Good luck!

@Andre L: I believe there is a shop that gives away free sarcasm detectors. You should take advantage of the offer.

@Andre: I'll remember that the next time I read you complaining about immigrants getting money, or the cost development aid. Give me a break.

I was first on scene of a serious road traffic accident. I called 112.
Because i did not know the name of the street only where I was geographically, the person hung up.
I do speak good Dutch
The speed of a old ambulance compared to a new one is minimal all the drempels and traffic calming are what slows them down
