Dutch social website Hyves in trouble as usage plummets

The number of people using Dutch social networking website Hyves plummeted 38% last year, while use of Facebook rose 45% in the Netherlands, according to the Newcom Research group.

Newcom polled 11,000 people over the age of 15 and found the number of Hyves users had fallen from 4.8 million to three million in 2011. On a daily basis, the number of users almost halved – from 1.7 million to 900,000.
By contrast, some 7.3 million Dutch people use Facebook, 6.9 million use Youtube and 3.2 million Twitter.
Hyves was bought by the Telegraaf Media Group at the end of 2010.
