Hands-free phoning can be no safer than holding a mobile phone in your hand while driving, according to road safety research foundation SWOV.

Drivers pay less attention to what is going on around them while phoning using either method, the report, based on an examination of existing research, says.
Almost one in three motorists spends parts of a car journey focusing on other things, such as talking to passengers, setting satellite navigation systems, eating and drinking. Most literature shows this lack of attention has a role in 5% to 25% of car accidents, the foundation concludes.
In particular, one report claims 70% of accidents involving lorries involve drivers who are not fully focused, the SWOV said.
In the Netherlands, it is illegal to drive while holding a phone.
