Customs officers seize 50,000 litres of spirits from Britain

Customs officers have seized a record 50,000 litres of whisky, rum and vodka from a warehouse in The Hague which was due to be smuggled back into Britain, the AD reports on Wednesday.

The tens of thousands of bottles were produced in Britain and, according to the paperwork, were due to be exported on to an unnamed eastern European country which is not a member of the EU. This meant the alcohol was not liable to various duties and taxes, the paper said.
In reality, however, the drink was supposed to be smuggled back into Britain and sold on the black market, the AD said. This would have cost the British tax authorities hundreds of thousands of pounds.
The find was made last month and no-one has been arrested, the paper said.
