Amsterdam is one of Europe's murder capitals, says Eurostat

Thursday 05 April 2012

Amsterdam is in fourth place in the 2007-2009 murder rate league table put together by European statistics agency Eurostat, news agency ANP reported on Thursday.

During those three years, there were 3.65 murders per 100,000 people living in the Dutch capital, Eurostat said.

Only Vilnius in Lithuania (7.9), Tallin in Estonia (6) and Luxemburg (4.24) had higher rates than Amsterdam, the news agency quoted Eurostat as saying. Brussels was fifth with a murder rate of 3.09.

According to police figures, there were 19 murders in Amsterdam in 2008 and 31 in 2009 - five of which were related to Albanian gang violence.

However, in 2010 and 2011 there were just 16 murders in the capital, making it likely Amsterdam has gone back down the league table.

Readers' Comments

Before this story blows up more than it already has, please define "murder". If it is in the first degree, then there is cause for concern. If the data points to crimes of passion, then that is another issue entirely.

my math might not be great however something stinks here.. 3.5 murders per 100,000 means 3.5 x 160 = about 500 total murders for the year out of 16 million people...where do they get numbers like 16 from ?

Allan, this is only about Amsterdam, not the country itself. Amsterdam has around 750 thousand inhabitants, so roughly the estimate was that (3.65 x 7.50) 27.37 people are being murdered in the city per year.

In perspective, "an October 2011 United Nations report on crime and drugs ranked Honduras as having the highest per capita homicide rate in the world at 82.1 homicides for every 100,000 inhabitants." [http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1135.html]

@Allan: 16m is the population of NL not Amsterdam !!

@ allan - indeed your math is not great... might want to crunch those numbers again. 16 million people live in THE NETHERLANDS, not AMSTERDAM. :)

Allan Lieberman,

First of all 16 murders occurred in 2010 and 2011 (whether both years had 16 or this is a combination I do not know), while this survey is only for data collected from 2007-2009. So, the article was suggesting the murder rate would go down. Also, this is strictly Amsterdam-related, not the entirety of Holland, so the data is not taken from all 16 million Dutch residents.

@IQ @Broseph @Allan Lieberman
It seems there is some confusion on the numbers to take. According to Wikipedia Amsterdam population is 768.000
It gets to more than 3.5 Millions considering the urban area (Diemen, Zuidoost, etc.). So the numbers should be correct, let's leave out of the discussion the whole country.
At this point I wonder what's the murder rate around Bijlmer.
