US lobbyists make large donations to PVV, says former MP

Wednesday 21 March 2012

American lobbyists make large donations to a foundation set up by the anti-immigration PVV, Hero Brinkman, the MP who left the party on Tuesday, told a television talk show on Tuesday evening.

Brinkman said he could not rule out the money being used to pay for Geert Wilders' defence on racial hatred charges but declined to comment further on what the money had been spent on. Nor would he comment on the size of the donations.

The PVV is thought to generate significant funding from Israeli and far-right supporters in the US.

No members

Because the PVV has no members, it does not receive government subsidies to run the campaigning side of its operations and relies instead on donations. The parliamentary party is fully funded by the state.

Brinkman also gave the Pauw & Witteman show more information about the PVV's website to collect complaints about eastern and central European nationals. One of the reasons he stepped down from the party was that he disagreed with the website.

Brinkman, a former policeman, said the website had recieved at least 100,000 hits, half of which were complaints about the site itself. Only a fraction of the total were actual complaints, the MP said.

Democracy

Brinkman, an MP for the PVV since 2006, told a news conference he had quit the party because he can no longer accept the lack of democracy within the organisation and the way different groups in society are constantly being singled out for criticism.

His decision means the ruling alliance – the minority cabinet plus PVV – no longer has a majority in parliament, although Brinkman said he will remain an independent MP and would continue to support the government.

Can't say I'm surprized, it's been suspected for a while now.

Glad to see all the slime and dishonesty come out about the PVV. I feel sorry that this still relatively popular party in Holland gets its funding from the US ultra conservatives, but I'm not surprised. Fortunately the ultra conservative racist type of groups and parties in the US never get much of the vote there.

By Bill | 21 March 2012 9:09 AM

Lets hope this is the begining of the end of this flirtation with fascism the Dutch seem to have had the last few years.

By jason buttle | 21 March 2012 9:17 AM

Are you saying that Santorum and Gingrich (even Romney) don't get much support in the US, Bill? If these people are not ultra conservatives, then who is?

By pepe | 21 March 2012 9:33 AM

@Bill, Don't the republicans get a large number of votes in the USA? How about the tea party? Please explain how the PVV is a racist group? They are anti Islam but Islam isn't a race.

The PVV us a legitimate legal party with over 20% of the populations support.

By Phil | 21 March 2012 10:02 AM

Imagine that! A bunch of wealthy radical foreigners suddenly hold sway over the Dutch government and its people. And here we are with conspiracy about immigrants 'taking over'. You can't make this stuff up!

By Kevin | 21 March 2012 11:03 AM

That should be regulated by law. What the is the biz of some thousands of km away entity in the democracy of Holland? This is getting ridiculous.

By Isaac | 21 March 2012 11:20 AM

How happy will the average Dutch person be knowing that foriegn interests are attempting to influence the political climate here?

By Donaugh | 21 March 2012 2:19 PM

Please know that I am not a fan of US politics and policies (or large weapon sales), if that was unclear for anyone. One reason I left the US was to get away from racist idiots and conservative weirdos. Silly me! Instead I moved to a country where they love these things obviously. I only wish Dutch people had been honest with me about their country and culture BEFORE I moved here, because I never would have come here had I known the real truth about the Netherlands.

By Bill | 21 March 2012 3:10 PM

Phil: The tea party in the US does NOT get many votes for your information. The republicans do not even hold a conservative candle to the hate sowing discriminatory doctrine of Wilders and his PVV. Try reading something other than PVV literature Phil, educate yourself please!

America, via the CIA, has a very very long history of manipulating the politics of other nations. Usually they employ extreme violence but bribery, corruption and propaganda are all proven methods as well so this really comes as no surprise at all. Read some of William Blum's or Noam Chomsky's works if you doubt this.

By Nik Morris | 21 March 2012 6:40 PM

Please do remember that this 'party' only polled 15% of the votes during the last general election. They do NOT represent the Dutch, any more than Rick Perry represents 'typisch' Amerikaan, Le Pen represents 'typisch Frans' or the BNP represents 'typisch Engelsman'.

Extremists will always attract the minority/extremist voters, but not the overwhelming majority. Europe is still nervous of this ilk, 80 years after the last extremist did more than 'taste' power.

By osita | 21 March 2012 7:49 PM

Phil, the party is a legal party simply because of antiquated Dutch laws, the reality is that it would not exist in any other EU nation.

The issue here, I think, is clear enough. Wilders gets backing from the Pro-Settler Movement and its backers in the US and in Israel. Why? That is the question and that is also clear. They want settlements in the West Bank so that there is no Palestine. To do that, they must demonize Islam and minimize sympathy for Muslims. Ie, Wilders is using Dutch Parliament for the Israeli Settler Movement. The Dutch people and NL interests are only an excuse.

By D Charles | 21 March 2012 10:16 PM

I hope that ample evidence can be produced and that this "group" (it isn't a party) can be banned forthwith and that Mr. Wilders and those misfits that held any prior knowledge to this will find themselves in a court of law. It's time to clean up this pig stack a.k.a Dutch politics once and for all.

By Dutchman | 22 March 2012 5:13 AM

@Bill, I think you are getting racism confused with the basic human psyche of belonging to a culture/tribe and the need to protect this culture/tribe.

I don't find the PVV racist or extreme in anyway, I find multiculturalism and political correctness extreme and often racist towards the natives.

By Phil | 22 March 2012 6:44 AM

@Bill: I'm moving back home to Canada soon because I can't find a job here, even with two MSc's. I'm a little sad that I couldn't make it here and have to start all over again in Canada, but the more I hear your comments (and others), the better I feel about my decision.

By Stupid | 22 March 2012 8:52 AM

@ Bill - I totally agree with you. I feel cheated as I had been fooled into thinking and expecting a lot of things which have been proven to be untrue (i.e. the easement of finding a job). News like this doesn't make it any better. Thank god the weather is looking up.

By Mandela | 22 March 2012 9:52 AM

Stupid: good choice, I wish I had a Canadian passport!! please keep commenting, we appreciate your input.
Mandela: thanks, keep your chin up and your backbone straight and strong :)
Enjoy today and this weather, and this single moment.

By Bill | 22 March 2012 1:05 PM

Funny Phil, my basic human psyche, along with those of everybody I know, feels the need to protect multiculturalism and respect for those who are different than us. I don't belong to a "tribe" and culture isn't a static, unchanging concept.

Do you walk around in clogs all day, Phil? And why do you post to a non-Dutch website in English all the time? That's not preserving your "culture" either.

By CW | 22 March 2012 1:28 PM

@Phil ok so Wilders and you are not racist...how about narrow minded bigots.I thik thats a fair description.

By jason buttle | 22 March 2012 1:30 PM

@Bill et al: it is true that the Netherlands promises and does not deliver, so to speak. That is because they are very good at selling themselves. I too was sad to see that NL is racist and indifferent while the world thinks it is liberal and free. But I do not agree that difficulty in finding work is related to this. Try get work elsewhere in EUrope and you'll also face problems (which I am facing too). Finally, the republicans are a decent conservative party which one can like or not (I don't), but have nothing to do with the ignorant racist populism of the PVV.

By Leon | 22 March 2012 2:06 PM

Nik: Noam Chomsky is one of my (anti) American heroes! thanks for mentioning his name, great thinker and writer.

By Bill | 22 March 2012 2:24 PM

Must be the same idiots that helped that woman who sold her soul Ali Hirsi. She was open and ready and begging for some pay off right wing group to take her under their wing. Hey come to think of it the comment made about why he came to Holland to get away from US politics should read more about the donations that The Queen gives to the Republican National Party in the US.

By truthspeaker | 22 March 2012 7:12 PM

big deal the USA influences politics in the NL. In the middle east they send the army in. This is reality, they are the most powerful country in the world. Politics is a hippy love everyone game, it's survival of the fittest

By Phil | 23 March 2012 9:18 AM

Bill: Please know we are not all like that, I know a lot of Dutch people, including myself, that are apalled by the change Holland has undergo in the last ten years. And we desparately want a ´Dutch Spring´. I hope this relevation of Brinkman (which was a rumour for years), will be the start of a Dutch reveille.

By Gonnie | 23 March 2012 3:12 PM

@Phil: No, the relationship between Lions and a herd of Zebra's is "survival of the fittest". Human beings and their democratically elected officials should act differently.
